About Us
Kirkjubær II camping and cottages is a family-owned and operated campground in Kirkjubæjarklaustur, Iceland.
Kirkjubær II Campsite began operations in 1994. The family at Kirkjubær II runs the campsite. It was the couple Ólöf Benediktsdóttir and Lárus Siggeirsson who started the business and received strong support from their family. Later, their son Benedikt Lárusson joined the operations.
Benedikt then took over the management in 2009 and runs the campsite today, with his wife Lilja Magnúsdóttir. Initially, it was just a campsite, but later small cabins were added because many people want to enjoy being at a campsite but desire slightly better facilities than sleeping in a tent.
In its early years, the campsite was only open during the summer, but with the increase in tourism, operations have changed, and now it is open for most of the year. However, it is closed during the coldest winter months: December, January, and February. We advertise the specific opening hours each year.
The family also runs Kjarr Restaurant, which is a small restaurant by Systrafoss waterfall that opened in the summer of 2022. There you can find dishes such as beef, lamb, pasta dishes, and vegetarian options. In Skaftárhreppur, people have long made a living from sheep farming, and therefore lamb is an important dish in this rural area. Also worth mentioning is Klausturbleikja (Klaustur Char), which is one of the main courses at Kjarr Restaurant. Klaustur Char is raised in tanks at two locations in Skaftárhreppur and processed in a building directly opposite the restaurant.
